Peckham Town Centre: Location, connections, and roads

Peckham is a vibrant area near the center of London. There are a few main roads around the center of Peckham, Peckham high street is the main street into Peckham, it also directs you onto the other main roads in Peckham including, Rye Lane and Peckham Hill Street. These streets are full of lots of shops, restaurants, and a few churches and schools, with the train station in the centre.

Peckham town center is in zone 2 in London. For being so only 4 miles away from central London it's not your classic tourist destination spot. It's easy to visit Peckham with a tube journey into the area every few minutes and direct cycling and car roads. The train station is in the centre of Peckham, with trains to many different destinations around the country. The drawing to the side shows the key routes people take from central London to go to Peckham.

Rye Lane is the key area in which the local shops are restaurants are located, it's one of the most diverse streets in London. The key reason why there are lots of pubs on the street is that during the 1700s Peckham was the last stop before London, may people would stay the night before traveling the next day and have a few drinks at the local pub. Rye Lane road size isn't very large considering it the main height. It has small pavements and car lanes, with no trees or bike lanes insight.

Above is a perspective view of Rye lane I drew from an image, it has a car lane and two small pedestrian lanes on either side. It has a tall and small buildings on each side, with the building on the right being the same size as the street. The urban design uses a street-to-building height ratio to express different types of enclosure. Rye lane uses a one to one ratio at some parts as the street is as wide as the tallest building.

Below is some images of how movement works around Peckham showing the main car routes, train routes, bus routes, and cyclist routes. The main roads for cars are also on the high streets where everyone is walking around doing their shopping. This needs to be addressed as people should have a lot of space to move around in such a busy area instead of minding out of the way for cars. There are no set cyclist lanes like there are in the centre of London. It's time the Peckham updates itself and adds cycling lanes to the main roads. Could the cyclist lanes replace the car lanes in the centre?
