Peckhams statistics, economy, politics and history
Statistics
Above are some statistics of Peckham's population, ethnicity, deprived areas, and household facts The first image shows the population in Peckham. The largest zones of people in a certain age group are 0-15,25-44, 45-64. These are the age groups that need to be catered to the most when redesigning the city.
Peckham town center is one of the most diverse areas in London. This can be seen by the statistics on ethnicity in the area. This is the reason why along the high street there are many different food and restaurants that serve food from all over the world. This is something that needs to continue with the new development.
Compared to the rest of London, Peckham is quite a deprived area, with 40% being the most deprived. Under 45% of people own their house or are mortgaging it, the rest are all renting either from the council or private residence. This shows that it's a deprived area as not many people can afford to own their houses.
Considering only 45% of people have a car there seems to be an awful lot of cars on the road. Maybe if the train station was easier to find or there were more bike lanes available to cycle, fewer people might want to use their cars.
Economy
Economic Criteria
There are currently over 100 small businesses in Peckham. Peckham town centre has a strong rate of start-up businesses. On a Sunday there is a market in the centre, this adds to the diversity and cultural identity of Packham.
Peckham is the most economically deprived area nationally:
Major economic groups
2-Traders (Independent shops)
3- Culture (Creative enterprise)
4- Heritage (heritage/restoration projects)
5- Religion (Faith worlds)
Crime
A total of 1148 street-level crime incidents happened in Peckham in July 2020. The biggest category was Anti Social Behaviour, followed by Violent crimes. In the image below, it shows all the key area the incidence happened, which were all based around central Peckham.
Politics
2011 England riots
In 2011, Peckham was involved in the Riots throughout London. Protests started in Tottenham but quickly spread into Peckham. The cause of the riots was following the death of a local named Mark Duggan who was shot by police. Shops and local businesses were torched and looted.
History of Peckham Town Center
Below is an illustration I made of the history of Peckham from 1690 to the current situation. In most of them there are images related to what happened at the time and in the blue lines are maps of the area during the date of the time I'm writing about.
